T-Styled Me’s SALE TIME Picks !

EVERY time it’s sale season, I wish I had saved up more to spend on the sales instead of convincing myself throughout the season to buy what I liked because nothing would be available or in my size come sale time and I’d really regret it. Really ..? Sigh … Sometimes I wish I could ignore my intuition !

I’ve been browsing the sales in Australia, but I secretly miss the manic European/UK sales for their range and availability. That being said, I DO have my greedy eyes set on a few Australian items at the moment (My credit card trembles hearing this, all the way from the freezer ‘Confessions of a Shopaholic’ style) and thank goodness for online shopping! I can’t stand competing against crazy sale shoppers and fighting for fitting rooms so my strategy is always to try things on during the season, compile my wish list (possibly succumb to a few items along the way) and then revisit the list at sale time. As I’m being “good” (i.e broke) here are a few of my favourite sale shares for you guys:

Harrods – London and Online

A.K.A Designer heaven! I personally find Harrods confusing to navigate around but the immaculately groomed sales assistants always help out (try not to drool stare).

T-Styled Me Tips:

  • Shop in store as opposed to online as there’s limited stock online.
  • There’s always a preview sale (30% of selected fashion) before the sale is public if you’re a rewards member (you can sign up for free)
  • If you can hold out, there’s always an additional 10% off full priced items and sale items two weekends after the public sale for reward members.
  • For handbags, seasonal stock will likely be discounted (not the Classics)

Okay, I’m not going to lie, I went to the Harrods preview sale instead of packing for Australia and sadly, my plan didn’t work … Somehow something went horribly wrong and I ended up with NO items on the list and two full priced items … FAIL! I’ll post those pics up soon but here are a few bargains I picked up last year, when I was a better sale shopper at Harrods:

Selfridges – Online and in London, Birmingham and Manchester

Awww … My favourite department store in London! Is it strange that I know it like the back of my hand? Selfridges is a younger and brighter Harrods so once again, go in stores to view all the bargains instead of shopping online.

Net-a-porter.com – Online and Ships Internationally

Like I need to tell you about the Net-a-porter sale! Almost my entire wish list sold out immediately when Net-a-porter.com went on sale but there were still some great bargains, especially in the accessories department. Here are a few T-Styled Me sale picks:

Alexander McQueen Paisley Scarf – I’d love a scarf in this colour for Autumn/Winter

Burberry Prorsum Ballet Flats – Practical and sensible with just a pop of colour

YSL Arty Rings – These look really fun and would brighten up any black ensemble.

ShopBop.com – Online and ships Internationally

I love that ShopBop.com stocks high-end designers as well as young emerging ones so I always check ShopBop.com to access my favourite brands, especially American designers. I find Shopbop.com secure to purchase from and reliable in terms of customer service. Here are a few T-Styled Me Sale picks:

Tibi Geneva Print Draped Dress:  I love the colours in the print…

Tibi Arizona Long Dress – Ok, I’m sorry this one isn’t on sale but I love how the print instantly transports me to memories of hot Summer days so I had to add it in here

The T-By Alexander Wang Long Sleeve knit is practical, great for layering during Winter and I can see it doubling up as a cooler Summer evening cover up.

Elizabeth & James Horseshoe Earrings – I’m tempted to get these to match my House of Harlow 1960 Horseshoe ring but wary of being too matchy matchy.

Elizabeth & James Small Ribbon Pendant Necklace – I don’t wear as much silver jewellery anymore but this is really simple and sweet.

RevolveClothing.com – Online and ships Internationally

I alternate between ShopBop.com and RevolveClothing.com when buying online and find that if one doesn’t stock an item, the other one will for sure! Here are some T-Styled Me Sale Picks:

House of Harlow 1960 Rose Gold Stack Rings – You know I’m a fan 🙂

Kimberley Taylor Odetta Dress as worn by Kendall Jenner – A cute party dress by NY designer Kimberley Taylor

Bec & Bridge Jungle Garden Asymmetrical Dress – Pop on a leather jacket and you’re ready for a night out on the town with this dress I say!

Rebecca Taylor Knock me out shorts – Sweet neutral coloured shorts to wear causally with a white t-shirt, statement jewellery and ballet flats.

My-Wardobe.com – Online and ships Internationally

Here are the T-Styled Me Sale Picks:

Tibi Blush Leather Silk Trim Shirt – I saw this at the Harrods preview sale and the leather trimming is gorgeous but my bank account said no …

DKNY’s Colour Block Sleeveless Sheath Dress – This looks more like a shift than a sheath dress to me but I love the colour scheme and the versatility of the dress on all body shapes. DKNY do great colour blocking dresses for both work and play.

Philip Lim 3.1 Lepoard Cigarette Pants – These look really fun and would look great with a brightly coloured top and a leather jacket or blazer with booties.

Carven Tribal Jacquard one Shoulder Dress – Sigh – I love that Carven make such quality structured and vibrant dresses! This is one of my ultimate faves but there’s none left in my size … boo

Hmmm … as I write this post I realise that I could be here for days. There are SO many of my favourite websites to share with you so I think I’ll have to choose some more T-Styled Me favourite Picks of the sale and new seasons collections in future posts. T-Styled Me: Understanding your body shape 101 (Part 2)

Following on T-Styled Me Body Shapes 101 Part 1 … here is Part 2:

Hourglass shaped

This is considered the ideal body shape due to its proportions and defined waistline and we strive to dress in a way to mimic this shape.

How do I know if I’m hourglass shaped?

  • Your hip and bust line measurements are the same
  • You have an obviously defined waistline (approx 8′-12′ less than bust/hips)
  • When you gain weight, fat stores proportionately in your curves
  • You generally have a rounded bottom and shapely legs
  • Note that you need not have a big bust and that hourglass shapes come in different sizes: skinny, average, curvy, petite curvy.
  • Also take into consideration your vertical body shape

Examples of Celebrities with hour-glass shaped figures

Can you think of any friends who have this body shape? I can and I’m always envious of their figures!
What to wear
  •  Fitted clothes and that accentuate your proportional body figure and make your waist the focal point.
What not to wear
  • Avoid baggy, loose shirts and bottoms that will hide your curves and avoid empire styled dresses that (i.e baby doll dresses) that hide your small waist.

T-Styled Me: Understanding your body shape 101 (Part 1)

I’ve made it back to the land down under in one piece, albeit majorly jet lagged and am fighting the urge this very moment at 1pm not to close down my laptop and hop into my big old comfy bed to nap. I hope writing this post helps me stay awake!

Since my last styling post where I classified Gee as having a rectangle body shape, many of you have shown interest in understanding how to dress for your own body shapes so I’m declaring this post a ‘T-Styled Me Body Shapes 101 post’ where I’ll focus primarily on the rectangle body shape and elaborate on the others body shapes as I post up more styling lessons with different body shapes later on.

Although there can be a LOT of factors to consider when dressing for your figure ( body shape, face shape, bone structure, skin tone etc) I’m taking a ‘Keep it simple’ approach and focusing on two main factors: Your horizontal and Vertical body shape

Body Shape (Horizontal Shape)

  • This body shape classification is based on the measurements of your horizontal proportions so the easiest way to determine this is to measure your full bust (no.2 below), natural waist (no.3 – smallest part, not sucking it in!) and your hips (no.5 – around your bottom at the widest point)
  • You may find that you don’t fit neatly into the 5 categories below and that’s perfectly fine. Often you can have a primary and secondary body shape but the key is to pay attention to the tips for both body types.

Rectangle body shape / straight figure

This is actually the most common body type and a relatively easy shape to dress in terms of balancing proportions.

How do I know if I have a rectangle body shape?

  • Your hips and bust are balanced but your waist is not very defined
  • Your waist measures 1′ to 8′ smaller than your bust
  • Your legs are shapely and one of your best assets
  • Your bottom is more flat than round
  • You tend to gain weight in your torso first then upper thighs and arms
Examples of Celebrities with rectangle shaped figures
  • The aim of dressing rectangle shapes is to add dimensions to your frame and curves from the waist up or waist down and show off your slender arms and legs
What to wear
  • To define your waist – invest in belts that are dark and simple in colour to accentuate your waist
  • Tops: Try Off the shoulder, boat neck, V, U and sweetheart necklines as well as belted jackets and tops to create a visual V towards your waist. You can also wear embellished, ruffled blouses and shoulder detailing to create curves in your upper body.
  • Bottoms: Tapered trousers, skinny jeans, bootleg cuts and capri pants will suit your shape. Look for detailing such as pockets on trousers to create curves and use flowy fabrics (eg summer shorts) to soften your boyish figure.
  • Dresses: Halter neck and wrap dresses are great. If you’re well endowed then wear a lower neckline which shows skin and vertically breaks up the chest area
  • Swim-wearModerate to full coverage bottoms (light, bright & patterned) and similarly ruffled, padded and push up bikini tops / tankinis.
 What not to wear
  •  Stay away from full and extremely baggy pants and straight boxy mini skirts as these will not help create curves.
  • Lucky for you there’s not a lot you can’t wear!

I’d suggest studying outfits that you like on similar body types such as Katie Holmes, Cameron Diaz, Heidi Klum and Kate Middleton (she’s probably a mix of an inverted triangle and rectangle) as these will likely work for you too.

T-Styled Gee in a Leather Jacket

Mixture of Leather jacket styles and brands including: Balenciaga, Burberry Porseum, Whisltes, All Saints and Zara

Click on collage above for a larger version

Sorry for the lack of posts of late! It has been really hectic and you probably saw on my FB Page that I traveled to the sunny beaches of Sardinia for the Queen’s Jubilee Long Weekend (how Un-British of me!) and now that I’m back in London, I’ve only a few days here before I jet set back to Melbourne so I’ve been running around a bit like a headless chook but I really wanted to sneak in this styling session post before I left.

My first T-Styled Me Styling session was with the very smart and beautiful Gee who mentioned a few months ago that she was thinking about getting a leather jacket but hadn’t quite found “the one” yet. Upon hearing this, my mind shifted into overdrive – It’s as though my brain’s internally wired to detect people with shopping needs, even if they don’t ask for help, so this particular challenge had me instantly filtering the ‘Leather Jacket’ mental archives. A few options immediately came to mind but were dismissed after discussing with Gee her colour preferences, budget and desired look. I wanted her to try the options I’d narrowed down and I was lucky enough to convince her to leave work early and let me take her shopping …

I’m keen for you guys to get to know a little more about Gee, especially as styling should always be about understanding who you’re working with and their personality, so in a bid to do this virtually, here are a few details about Gee.

Gee’s Profile Stats

  • G’s Height:  5 ft 4” (1.65m)
  • Skin tone: Dark / Brown
  • Build: Slender and athletic
  • G’s Body shape: Boyish / Rectangular (I’ll do a body shape post soon!)
  • General Clothing size: Size Small (S) i.e UK/AUS size 8.
  • Tops: 8 UK/AUS and Bottoms: 8 – 10 UK/AUS depending on cut
  • Lifestyle: Active and busy – Gee loves a gym workout, running and cycling
  • Shopping preference: Generally a ‘Needs’ more so than on a ‘Wants’ basis
  • Shopping frequency: On average, once every few months
  • Style: Smart, relaxed and casual
  • Personality (in three words): Super intelligent, fun and down-to-earth (All in my opinion!)

Gee’s Leather Jacket criteria

  • A simple Black or Brown Leather Jacket with little detailing (i.e no faux fur or shearling lining) that could be thrown over casual dresses come the cooler Summer evenings in London but more so to wear with a t-shirt and jeans / trousers / shorts – pieces she frequents outside work hours.

T-Styled Me shops online: House of Harlow 1960 Mint Green Pyramid Necklace @hoh1960

Now since I complained about London’s lack of sun in my previous post, of course, the sun decided to make an appearance to prove my ‘Cold.Wet.Typical.London’ theory wrong. But in this case, I’m more than happy to take it all back: London’s really warm and lovely at the moment and my eyes are delighting in the colourful Summer outfits filling the streets as people venture outside and desperately give their stocked up Summer wardrobes that much-needed airtime. I love that it’s officially now an acceptable excuse to leave the office at 4pm on any given weekday and explain with a ‘I plan to enjoy the sun’ look. The understanding is British – no one argues; they simply pat you on the back and head down to the pub to join you.

I’ve been waiting to wear this House of Harlow Mint Green Pyramid Station Necklace for a few weeks now but unfortunately it hasn’t really fit into the recent winter coat, scarf, wellies and umbrella uniform I’ve been sporting so now that the sun’s out of hibernation, it’s show time baby !

For those who are unfamiliar with the ‘House of Harlow 1960’ brand, you’re about to be introduced to a favourite costume jewellery line of mine. ‘House of Harlow 1960’ is celebrity Nicole Richie’s designer jewellery line (named after her daughter, Harlow Kate) which debuted in 2008.

T-Styled Me’s Best and Worst Styled Picks: Cannes Film Festival 2012

The Cannes Film Festival is one of the World’s most prestigious International film festivals held annually in France, premiering documentaries and films of all genres and awarding films coveted awards in various categories based on the votes of a selected board of jurors. It’s a great chance for the stars to showcase designer gowns and for us regular folks to ‘oooh and ahhh’ over the gowns we can only dream of …

  • T-Styled Me’s Vote for Best Styled goes to …

Diane Kruger – On multiple counts by various designers!

Diane Kruger is a first time juror at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and I think she’s done really well (especially since she’s sans stylist) by selecting from a wide range of designers with different looks. It’s also nice to see her step away from her usual Chanel ensemble every once in a while.

It was really hard to choose a T-Styled Me BEST dress seeing as I was equally impressed by most of her choices but if I were forced to choose, I would go with the following dress as my favourite over the very popular Giambattista Valli Haute Couture aqua gown

Vivienne Westwood Corset Dress

Why?

I distinctly associate British Vivienne Westwood’s collections as works of Art. With art, you either understand it and love it or hate it or just simply agree to appreciate it. I’m the latter with Westwood; her style is distinct, quirky and definitely not mainstream and I wouldn’t have guessed this a classic Westwood design at all! The tailored cut and structure of the corset dress drew my attention immediately – The craftsmanship is amazing on this dress. It was undoubtedly hand embroidered with paillettes (small pieces of metal) which provides that metallic look which is currently SO on trend. Not only is her tiny waist accentuated by the structure of the corset, but the ruching and folds in the gown also create an illusion that Diane has a much more cury bottom half than she has in reality.

She kept her make up fresh and soft and let the angles of her gown do the talking. Clutch and heels are also from Jimmy Choo (Go Brits!)

I love the romantic ethereal feel of this dress and would love this for myself …

T-Styled Me Outfit Post: Little White Summer Dress – LWSD

Are you a big fan of pasta? You’re probably thinking to yourself ‘Um … Who isn’t ?!’ Well … I’ll raise my hand and be the first to admit that I don’t like pasta at all. Wait, that’s not entirely true. While I missed out on the ‘I love pasta’ gene, I do have the ‘I only like Spaghetti Bolognese’ variation and despite having travelled Italy many times, I’m yet to connect to other varieties the same way I do with Spaghetti Bolognese. Being part of my DNA, I felt the call to pilgrimage to Bologna, Italy, the birthplace of Bolognese, in hope of tasting the BEST bolognese of my life …  Bologna: A university city, famous for gastronomy moreso than historical sites

To set the scene it was 32 degrees Celcius on Saturday in Bologna, 32!! Now if you’ve been in London recently (wet.cold.miserable.typical.London) or you live in my hometown Melbourne, you’ll understand the dazzling effect the mere thought of anything above 15 degrees can have on one’s mood. I, for one, could not stop smiling; I was high on Vitamin D, gelato, granitas and the prospect of wearing a summer dress
